In 2014 I want

The Winter Solstice is liminal space, between darkness and light. After a cycle into darkness, we reach the shortest day of the year.  The Sun makes its return, as the days get longer.  It is an ending and a beginning… it is an opportunity to begin to set into motion what you’d like in your life in the coming year.

So every year (sort of) I do my New Year’s Resolutions. I don’t actually write them down.  I don’t want even paper to be the witness to the lies I am about to tell. I know the point is to improve your life but first I have to get over that awful feeling that something must be done to do it.  In other words   something has to change. And then there is the guilt and overwhelm when you notice you are not getting the job done. Change is one of the things that I wish I had an instant formula for to create at will.  There are so many things that we do automatically that we aren’t even aware of it. There is a warm and worn comfort in doing the same random things in a repetitive cycle. It offers predictability. If I do this I know the results I will get. Challenging that is difficult.

I’m not going to say do your News Year’s Resolutions I’m going to ask you to create space – that is, letting things go. After all, it’s hard to change your world if there’s no space for desire to land. You’re standing on a threshold where would you like your life to go? If you would like to do this kind of planning I am offering a free psychotherapy consultation in person, by phone or by Skype where we you can begin to think about what you want and where you are going (set aside 45 minutes for this I have office hours in the evenings and weekends) if you are interested please see my website
