Stuck in bars
Many people feel bored, restless and think about life as being drab or depressing. When I say drab I mean that there is no point to anything, no purpose, color or feeling. Just one work day after another. This is why so many people rush to the bars for a little liquid courage
If you think that life is empty you will feel bitter because it lacks meaning for you. You need an escape some way to release even if means oblivion. You have lost touch. We have a culture of frantic doing. And with that doing comes exhaustion and overwhelm. So to relax we throw some back and it soon becomes a relentless cycle. Why is it that and how do I change that?
Because alcohol effects the brain alcohol slows you down it also affects your reward center. It gives you a rush of feeling great (that’s called dopamine) and the more you drink the more you deplete the amount of dopamine in your brain. And it can affect your entire week especially if going to the bars is a routine.
So everything gets sadder, slower and awful. Alcohol is a form of downer. It represses inhibitions (party on!) and it also increases aggression and sadness. I worked with one woman who would go to tailgate parties and get thrown out of the stadium for getting into fights. And when she talked about her social life it was always the same thing well we go to the bar and… Except there was no “and” it simply was we go to a bar.
Do you just hang out in bars? Are you getting into fights? You need to do two things notice how much you drink and when it gets out of control. What number of drinks is it? Stop one before that. You need to have a clear head where you can still make a decision to stop. I am not saying abstinence is the only way. There is another way; it is self-control while you are still with friends.
And then look at your social group move them to try to do something different to break up the monotony. Yes it will take some creativity and momentum to do this. It means you take a step into a leadership role. There are other things to do besides sitting and drinking. Find them. You may even start thinking about life and what you really want to do in it. Every day that you have is yours, you need to claim it. As opposed to doing the routine the default of what everyone else is doing. But isn’t it better to have spirit then to drink it? Think about it. Then do something about it.
